About the Business

I have been working in complementary therapies and natural medicines part time since 2001 but it was a personal tragedy that led me to leave the corporate environment and pursue my true passion in life and that is how I came about setting up Barefoot Medicine Acupuncture Clinic and establishing my full-time complementary therapy practice.

Named after the Barefoot Doctors in China who were teachers as well as healers, I share their values of helping people to help themselves to heal. Using acupuncture, herbal remedies, massage, electro-acupuncture, moxibustion, nutrition, mindfulness including meditation and relaxation my goal is to get people back on track to achieving their full potential.

Whilst traditional values remain very important to me, I also believe that 5000 years of anecdotal evidence of the efficacy of Chinese Medicine should be balanced with the modern day evidence-based medicine and the knowledge that we have gained through scientific advances. For this reason, your treatment is likely to have a strong focus on outcome measures and therefore a baseline assessment will be undertaken during the initial consultation and results will be followed up every five sessions (although that may vary depending upon your condition).

I have been privileged to work for the British Acupuncture Council part time since 2014 as the Professional Development Lead for practitioner members across Wales, Herefordshire and Shropshire. This means that I assist other acupuncture practitioners with their CPD (continuing professional development) commitments and I also work with newly qualified acupuncturists or those returning to the profession who need advice and support in getting their business up-and-running.

Acupuncture

There are many styles of acupuncture, but at Barefoot Medicine I practice Traditional Chinese Acupuncture (TCM) and 5-Element Acupuncture. Both styles come from the classical texts from China and are equally valid systems of treating a person’s mind, body and spirit to overcome illness.

This can be contrasted with Medical Acupuncture as practiced by doctors, physiotherapists and osteopaths, who insert needles into trigger points to alleviate pain. This is often successful, but requires training of only a matter of days or weeks. It is ‘acupuncture’ in the technical sense, but does not offer the full body system of diagnosis, prevention and holistic approach that was originally practiced in the Far East.

Underlying Principles of Acupuncture:

Traditional acupuncturists believe that the underlying principle of treatment is that illness and pain occur when the body’s vital energy, or Qi, cannot flow freely. There can be many reasons for this; emotional and physical stress including poor nutrition, infection or injury. By inserting ultra-fine sterile needles into specific acupuncture points, a traditional acupuncturist seeks to re-establish the free flow of Qi to restore balance and trigger the body’s natural healing response.

Up until the 1940s, when the Chinese government commissioned the development of a uniform system of diagnosis & treatment referred to as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
